Why Lawyers Need SEO

There are several reasons why lawyers and their firms need to have their sites optimized for search engines (SEO), but the most important one is visibility to potential clients.

The legal field is highly competitive, and unless firms pay to promote their landing pages, they won’t get much business from organic searches if they don’t put time and effort into ensuring that their on-site SEO allows them to rank high on search engine results pages (SERPs).

Why is this? First, if a prospective client is doing a search for a lawyer in their area, they’re likely to do some research to find an experienced attorney on whom they can rely for expert representation, but they’re less likely to look beyond the first few pages of search results. This means that the better the SEO is for a lawyer’s site, the more leads they will likely receive in the form of interested clients.

Let’s say a person is looking for a DUI lawyer in the city where they live. Most likely, unless they get a referral from a friend or colleague, they’ll open their browser and search for “DUI lawyer” along with the name of the city, let’s say “San Diego”.

There will be a number of law firms who specialize in DUI representation in San Diego, but which ones are the first to appear in the results? The ones who have taken the time to fine-tune a landing page to rank highly for “DUI lawyer San Diego”.

Law firms get leads and growth from several different channels, and it’s still important that a lawyer has a great reputation in their industry, but having your site copy optimized to rank highly in organic search results is a steadfast strategy to capture the eyes of more prospective clients.
