The Best Practices for Blog Post Writing

Blogging is no longer a new concept. However, despite being around for many years now, it is still one of the most popular methods that companies use to promote their products and services on the internet. It’s novel in the sense that it is a form of advertising that internet users often times consume on its own merits. However, for your blog articles to be successful, they need to be properly search engine optimized. Here are some best practices to take to heart if you want to create a blog with effective search engine optimization.

1. Optimize Length

Length is a balancing act. One thing you should know about Google search engine algorithms is that Google actually gives preference to longer articles. This makes sense. Google wants to use its algorithms to locate content that can provide value to the end user. Longer articles of course provide more content and thus more value.

However, just because that is the case does not mean you should make your article too long. If it’s too long, it may be intimidating to internet users who don’t want to spend a half an hour of their free time reading something. Users that attempt to read such an article may abandon it half way through. That can diminish the effectiveness of the ad or ad placement within the article. Instead, you should aim for a length that isn’t too short but also doesn’t go on and on endlessly.

2. Link to Yourself

While you’ll likely be including links to specific products, you can go beyond that by inserting even more links that have a direct benefit to you and the companies you are promoting. One easy way to do this is to link to previous blog articles.

This can be very beneficial. It will allow you to use newer blog articles to direct new viewers to older content. This way the number of hits you receive for certain articles isn’t immediately diminished in favor of newer articles. It can allow you to direct users to older ads and help convert more of them into paying customers for different products. If done often enough, this can help give your blog ads a more evergreen element to them as opposed to only hoping they are found much later via search engine.

3. Use Keywords Strategically

While keywords have always been strongly associated with SEO, these days, you need to be more careful about how you integrate them into content. If you go overboard and stuff your article to the rim with keywords, Google’s algorithms will certainly notice. This will not result in you getting a higher page ranking. It will result in punishment for your blog. You could even have the article delisted for the keywords in question all together.

Overall, Google’s current methods for search engine ranking are centered on content as opposed to keywords. While you may still want to use keywords, you should be more subtle about it. Use them sparingly. You should also make sure that the content is focused on the keywords naturally. Don’t insert off topic keywords into articles where their use doesn’t make sense. Develop content about the keywords in a more natural way.

4. Integrate Media

Images and videos can certainly enhance the text of a blog post and help you do a better job promoting companies and their products. They can also be great for SEO purposes as well. If you are able to get an image related to your keywords listed in Google or Bing image search, it can start funneling readers to your blog. Searching for images is one of the ways people use the internet to find what they want.

While search engine optimizing media is a little bit different than text, it’s not as difficult as it may seem. In fact, search engines like Google often automatically link an image to the keywords that appear on the page of a blog article. Including keywords in the file name or alt text may not even be necessary.
