SEO is a topic on every business owner’s mind. Though it’s complex, it’s not incredibly difficult. There’s a lot to know, but grasping the concepts isn’t that hard. Here are five tips that will get you started with SEO marketing for your website or business.

1. Smart Keyword Research

In order to know which keywords to use in your SEO campaign, you have to conduct SEO research the right way. Your first step should be to figure out what your audience members are naturally searching for. Think about what you would search for as a potential client of your own business. Then, jot down the instant results that show up in Google, as well as the suggested keywords at the bottom of the page. Once you have a list of relevant keywords, check their search volume and whether or not they’re trending, which will help you narrow down your list even more. Now you’ll have a list of relevant and popular hashtags to naturally add to your content.

2. Metadata

Every time you write a blog post or create a new website page, there’s metadata to fill in. This metadata is optional, which is why so many people skip it – either they don’t know it’s there or they think it’s unimportant. The page or blog post titles and descriptions are the metadata, and you can also fill this information in for photos and videos. Make sure that the metadata is unique for each type of content – even if have two similar blog posts, for example, the metadata should be different for each one.

3. Content

The more content your website has, the better your SEO will be, so long as you’re adhering to white hat tactics (no keyword stuffing or bait-and-switch titles, for example). Create content for your website at least one time a week, and always optimize that content will relevant keywords, plus on-site and off-site links. Every time you post to your blog, you have another opportunity to add metadata, including a title, description, tags and categories.

4. Mobile Responsiveness

There’s no reason why your website or blog shouldn’t be adaptable to mobile devices. Today, people spend a ton of time on mobile, and some of your customers even prefer mobile over desktop. If people can’t find your business when they search on their mobile device, or if they can find your website but they have a hard time reading it because it’s not responsive, your SEO is going to suffer. Make your website mobile-friendly – there’s no excuse not to.

5. Create and Submit Sitemaps

Every website should have a sitemap. A sitemap has a list of all of your website’s pages, and it shows how pages connect to one another. For example, it can show that your dessert and cocktail menus are listed under your menu link. Search engines have an easy time crawling sitemaps, which means they can index them more accurately and quickly, which improves your SEO. It’s always a good idea to submit your sitemap to the Google Search Console.

When you prioritize your SEO, you make it easier for your target customers and clients to find you. Inbound marketing is highly effective, and it’s an excellent use of your time and resources. There are numerous SEO tactics to try out, but getting started is a big part of the battle. Try out a technique or two to see how it works, and then add more techniques once you’re on a regular maintenance schedule.
