It seems that there are more companies competing for SEO work than ever. If you want to find the right company, you’ll need to do a little detective work. Fortunately, much of what you need to find can come directly from the SEO companies you are ocnsidering. Below are three tips for choosing the right SEO agency to help your website succeed.

Look at their Portfolio

It’s never a good idea to be an SEO company’s first client. Instead of listening to their marketing spiel, it’s best to see what they’ve done. Every good SEO company has a list of clients that they’ve been able to help. These are the sites of which they are most proud and generally those that rank the highest. While you might not see everything the company has ever done, you should be able to get a few examples of what they’ve been working on lately as well as their biggest successes.

If you can’t get any examples of the company’s work, you should walk away as quickly as possible. SEO companies are absolutely companies that require word of mouth to grow, so those that won’t talk about past projects are the most likely to have had poor performance in the past. If you can’t get a look at previous work, you can rest assured that there’s nothing there they want you to see.

Get Recommendations

SEO companies are great at advertising, but the best companies get a great deal of business through old-fashioned word of mouth. Ask the company for a few references and you should not only get that list of websites above but also the contact information for those with whom they have worked. As always, this will be a curated list but it should prove to you that the SEO company has a good working relationship with at least a few of its previous clients. If it won’t produce a list, you might have some trouble getting a realistic opinion of the work that’s been done.

If you can’t get any kind of recommendations from the company’s former clients, you might want to talk to a few people in your local business community. While you probably won’t get much information from those in your industry, you should be able to talk to people from your various business organizations to get a firm idea of with whom they work.

Check Reviews

If you run a business, you know that online reviews can be something of a double-edged sword. While this is certainly true when it comes to SEO businesses, you still owe it to yourself to look at pages like Yelp for information. While you know that the reviews you find will likely be biased, you might be able to get a good look at how the public feels about the SEO company with which you want to work.

Almost as important as the information found there will be how the SEO company responds. Do they address concerns quickly? If so, you know they’ll be responsive with your site. Do they ignore problems and let them fester? That’s a sign that they’ll let your site languish. Pay attention to how these companies react to criticism and praise online.

Always remember that a good SEO company will provide your business with tangible benefits. If they aren’t willing to show you what they can do for you, there’s a good chance that they can’t provide you with what they claim. Look for references, portfolios, and even online reviews – the more you know, the better the choice you’ll make.
