Search Engine Optimization Basics

You cannot expect to create a basic website, throw up some ads and see the money start rolling in to your account. The top earning websites in the world belong to owners willing to put in the time and learn the basics of search engine optimization. Better known as SEO, the term refers to the way in which site owners use keywords, phrases and tags to drive more traffic and make pages rank higher in searches. Knowing more about SEO is the best way to increase your hits and get a higher spot in search engine rankings.

Make Content King

Content is king, especially when it comes to websites. The more relevant SEO content you have on your website, the more page views you can get. It’s important that you focus on one specific topic or niche and create content relating to that niche. If you try to cover too many topics, Google and other search engines may view your site as irrelevant and lower your ranking. Make sure that you include links to resources you use in your articles and that you link to images and other content relating to your site too.

Think Outside the Site

As important as SEO is, it’s also important that you think outside of your website. With so many social networking sites out there, now is a good time to incorporate your page into those sites and use those sites to drive traffic back to your page. Instagram lets you post pictures and links, and both Twitter and Facebook now let you use hashtags. Relevant hashtags can help you grab the attention of people interested in the topic covered on your site. If they see something they like, they’re more likely to follow the link to your site.

Remember Meta Descriptions

While Google may ding your page for using the same keyword too many times, it won’t ding you for using that keyword in meta descriptions and tags. When determining the keywords to use on your page, add that same keyword to the description of your page, the description of any images used on the page and any tags you include as well. You can also use similar keywords in those descriptions and tags without Google lowering your overall ranking. Using similar but not exact keywords may also help you reach people searching for various word strings.

Become a Link Expert

In general, the more links you use on your website, the more links you might get back in return. When you link to a site covering a similar topic and inform the owner of that site, the owner might add a link to your page in return. The more links to your site that there are online, the more references there are to your page, which can lead to search engines increasing your ranking. Experts also recommend that you include links to reputable sites relating to your niche. This can show viewers that you want to give them access to the best information and latest news.

Promote and Promote Some More

SEO involves more than just your website. You also want to give some thought to promoting your site on popular social networking sites and on other websites. Using Facebook is an easy way to get a large number of likes in a short period of time and share information and links to your site with millions of people. Instagram is another popular site, and millions of people also use Twitter and other similar sites. In addition to using hashtags as your keywords, try incorporating other keywords and phrases when updating posts, sharing links and uploading photographs.

SEO refers to the way in which you use different methods to optimize your website and get more viewers. Though many think it only relates to keywords, it also applies to meta descriptions, hashtags and images. Using the right words, phrases and images in your content helps you better optimize your page.
