One of the keys to determining an online business’s success is search engine optimization or SEO for short. However, many new online entrepreneurs may be confused about exactly how they should approach SEO in a way that benefits their business. To help, below are seven easy steps to take to improve your SEO.

1. Focus on Content

If there is one thing that has certainly been true with recent trends in SEO, it is there is now a much stronger focus on content. Google, Bing and the other large search engines realize that they are just tools people use to find relevant content. Modern search engine spider algorithms are designed to punish websites that pull a bait and switch in regards to advertising content that does not exist.

2. Find a Unique Niche

To stand out among scores of similarly themed online businesses, you need to do something to set yourself apart from your competition so people can actually find you. Otherwise, you’re going to be a needle in a haystack to the average internet user. For example, instead of opening a generic cyber toy store, you could hone in on super hero toys marketed to collectors.

3. Develop Your SEO Keywords

At the center of SEO is the keyword and keyword phrase. This is what an internet user enters into the search bar to find websites. You need to have the ability to accurately predict what a person will use to find your website. Do some research into common key terms that are entered into the major search engines to see if you can find any that relate to your company’s products or services.

4. Target Your Intended Audience

However, good content and SEO practices aren’t going to mean much if the people you are attracting to your website don’t actually purchase anything. You need to be a bit shrewder than that. Instead, design your SEO and content to market your products and services to the exact demographics you are trying to attract as customers. If you are Chicago bakery, obviously integrating Chicago into your SEO keyword phrases is a very smart idea.

5. Integrate Keywords into Your Content Strategically

To implement an SEO strategy that uses keywords and keyword phrases, you are going to need to integrate them into your content in a way that will be recognized by search engines. However, you should still use some strategy. Simply repeating the same keyword phrase over and over again on a page will more than likely result in your website being punished by the major search engines. A more strategic idea, for example, would be integrating the keyword into the title of the website.

6. Strategically Implement Backlinks

Backlinks are another element of SEO that should certainly not be overlooked. A backlink is a link to your website that exists somewhere else on the internet. However, much like keywords, you need to approach backlinks strategically. Simply spamming other websites with links is not what you want to do.

Instead, approach other websites that are somehow related to your industry and request that they link to your website. This more natural strategy may help raise your standing in search results especially if the websites in question already rank high for your keywords.

7. Create a Sense of Community

You also need to give people a reason to come back to your website repeatedly and treat you like an authority. To do this, you need to foster a sense of community. This means reaching out to your customer base and making them directly involved. One way to do this is by supplying interactive content like games and message boards. Reaching out to consumers via social media platforms is also an excellent idea.

Overall, SEO these days means launching a comprehensive strategy that includes content, key words, backlinks, social media and more. There isn’t a single solution to creating successful SEO.
