Creating an SEO strategy can be overwhelming for many small business owners. If you’re not a digital marketing expert, it can seem like search engine optimization goes right over your head.

Search engine optimization helps your business get noticed by your community. When you have a strong SEO strategy, you’re able to attract more business and get new sales. But if you don’t have the budget to hire a professional SEO strategist, you may be feeling at a loss.

But you don’t need to be an SEO strategist to get the online boost your business needs. These five tips can help you create a better SEO strategy — regardless of how much (or how little) you know about SEO.

1. Know Your Target Audience

The right SEO strategy comes down to how well you know your audience. In order to create a SEO strategy that gets you results, you need to know what your target audience is looking for online. Before you begin doing any SEO keyword research, take a moment to understand exactly who your target audience is. What would they be looking for online? What language would they use in their search? What kind of content are they looking for?

2. Create Your Online Listings

As a local business, you’ll have a lot of customers wanting to look up store hours, reviews, and locations. In order to reach those audience members appropriately, you want to have all your listings efficiently filled out. Take a moment to properly fill in your Google My Business page, your Yelp page, and your Travel Advisor page. If you have any other listings, make sure your information is correct and complete.

3. Use a Mobile Friendly Site

Many customers complete local searches when they’re on the go. If you’re a small business that serves a local community, you want to ensure your customer can get the information they need if they don’t have access to a traditional computer. Using a mobile friendly site allows you to appear on a Google search. Your page should be fully responsive with information that is clearly displayed and easy to locate.

4. Establish Social Media Profiles

Your social media profiles will give you a better opportunity to interact with the members of your community, but it can also improve your SEO. You want to create as many strong links as possible that push back to your website. Social media is one of the best ways to do so because it is easy, free, and you’re entirely in control. At least set up a Facebook profile and a Twitter account for your small business. If you’re feeling up for it, a Pinterest account and an Instagram account can also help you reach a larger audience.

5. Produce High-Quality Content

Many small business owners get trapped up in keyword research and using the right keywords. While keywords are important to your SEO strategy, they won’t necessarily make or break your search engine optimization efforts. If you’re struggling to do keyword research or you have no idea where to start, focus on creating high-quality content instead. Answer the questions your audience members are looking for, provide them with valuable information, and ensure you’re going above and beyond to help your reader.

You don’t need to be a digital marketing expert to implement these SEO strategies. If you’re a small business owner hoping to boost your online presence, these five tips can be a great place to get started.
